Michigan football has been building momentum on the recruiting trail. The commitments haven’t come yet, but the Wolverines tend to do a lot of their work in the summer.

With a coaching change and an entirely new defensive staff, it’s not a surprise that there has been a bit of a reset when it comes to Michigan football recruiting.

However, the Wolverines have started to grab the lead in some recruitments. They got expert projections for three separate players last week. Taz Williams, Avery Gach, and Quincy Porter visited over the weekend. Michigan football has made positive moves with each of them.

Another piece of good news is that Michigan football made the top eight for Trey McNutt, a five-star safety prospect from Ohio in the 2025 class. He’s 6-foot, 180 pounds, and ranked 26th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

McNutt included the Wolverines so they still have a shot. But Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oregon, and USC are the top contenders. Lamar Morgan is the new secondary coach and he’ll have his work cut out for him.

Ohio running back visited again

Another Ohio recruit targeted by Michigan football is four-star running back Marquise Davis. The Wolverines weren’t viewed as a contender but then Tony Alford was hired as U-M running backs coach.

That changed the dynamic with Davis, who has visited Michigan twice since the hire of Alford. This recent visit was a multi-day visit and while EJ Holland of The Wolverine said he wasn’t ready to put in a prediction, Michigan is near the lead. The Wolverines also lead with Ohio’s Dawayne Gallaway and even though some commitments in short order would be nice, Michigan has plenty of irons in the fire.
