MLB commissioner Rob Manfred not optimistic A's will remain in Oakland

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred is no longer optimistic that the Oakland A's will remain in Oakland with Las Vegas looking like a potential destination.

During an appearance with Chris Russo on Sirius XM radio, Manfred said that even though the mayor of Oakland has made a huge effort to keep the team, but that "it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

“I think the mayor in Oakland has made a huge effort to try to get it done in Oakland. It just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I think the A’s have proceeded prudently in terms of exploring the Las Vegas alternative, given the lack of pace in Oakland," Manfred told Russo. "I think they have to look for an alternative."

The A's have been in the market for a new stadium for years given the poor condition of their current home but have been unable to get anything completed.

While Manfred has his doubts about the A's remaining in Oakland, he has a very different opinion on the Rays' potential to remain in the Tampa area.

“I think (with) a properly located facility in (the) Tampa (Bay area), that Tampa’s a viable major-league market,” Manfred told SiriusXM radio. “I’ve got a lot of faith in (Rays principal owner) Stu Sternberg. I think they will find a place to get a ballpark built and I think baseball can thrive in Tampa.”

The Rays and A's have the two worst stadium situations in the league and are constantly at the top of potential relocation lists.
