MLB home run leader to miss extended time on injured list

Amid their longest losing streak of the season, the New York Mets have suffered another blow, losing first baseman Pete Alonso for potentially the next month.

On Friday, the Mets placed the slugger on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist bone bruise and sprain. Typically, these types of injuries take three to four weeks to heal properly.

Alonso took a 97 mph fastball from Charlie Morton to the wrist on Wednesday during the Mets' 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Following the game, the initial update on Alonso's status was positive. His X-rays came back negative, and the Mets listed him day-to-day with a wrist contusion. However, a CT scan on Thursday revealed more damage.

It's a terrible break for Alonso, who was on pace for a career year at the plate. The 28-year-old leads MLB in home runs (22) and RBI (49), slashing .231/.326/.546 over 62 games.

New York recalled Luis Guillorme to take Alonso's spot on the roster. Guillorme recorded 14 hits with three RBI in 60 at-bats this season before being sent down to Triple-A Syracuse on May 17.

The news on Alonso could have been better, but he'll be back in the Mets' lineup eventually. Unfortunately for New York, Alonso might return too late to salvage a season quickly spiraling downward.

The Mets have lost six games in a row heading into Friday night's contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates. New York has fallen to fourth in the National League East with a 30-33 record, only four games better than the last-place Washington Nationals (25-36).
