Because the World Series starts today between the Astros and Phillies, we aren’t likely to get much news about the White Sox’ managerial search until it ends. However, in what has been a relatively quiet process overall for the team, one major candidate has continued to gain and lose steam throughout.
Former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who has been listed as everything from just a candidate to the leading managerial option, is now being named as an “odd fit” for the White Sox by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. As a result, Heyman does not believe that Ozzie Guillen will be the White Sox’ next manager.
“I’d be shocked if they hired him. My impression is there’s very little chance of this. I don’t think the other people in the front office want this.”
Previously, it had been reported that Guillen had “not been ruled out” as the next White Sox manager, according to Bruce Levine. Guillen, in the past, has not been shy about his desire to potentially manage the club. He recently said on NBC Sports Chicago that he is interested in “listening” to the White Sox if they reach out, though doesn’t necessarily consider the job to be in his future plans.
“It is not in my plans. I don’t know if it is in the White Sox’ plans,” Guillen said on NBC Sports Chicago. “Even if they think I can help them for next year, I’m very open to listening to it.”
Guillen has been a fan favorite throughout his time with NBC Sports Chicago, and in a recent Sox on 35th poll with fans, he was the leading vote-getter amongst respondents. Guillen would bring his World Series champion resume back to the South Side, though it’s clear that if this were to work, there would have to be a “clearing of the air” of sorts in the White Sox’ front office, given how Guillen’s time on the South Side ended.
