MLB, players union helping domestic violence victims
Major League Baseball and the players association are making a difference amid the coronavirus pandemic. MLB and MLBPA will be donating $50,000 each to six organizations that aid domestic violence survivors, according to ESPN.
The donation is part of the Healthy Relationships Community Grant initiative, and MLB and the union agreed to donate $3 million from their joint charitable fund in different stages through 2021.
Among places receiving the donation is Lutheran Settlement House in Philadelphia, which will use the money for a bilingual domestic violence program. Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center Inc. in Newburyport, Mass., will use the money for a children's safety project and the YWCA of San Diego County for its Becky's House domestic violence program.
House of Ruth in Pomona, Calif., Houston Area Women's Center and Sanctuary for Families Inc. in New York will use the donations for general operating expenses.
MLB and the union have donated to various efforts over the years, but this one seems like it's very important to them.
"We do a lot of joint donations, but this one is probably one that we've given most money jointly, on because it is that important and it's something that we think is going to continue to unfortunately get worse," senior director of international and domestic player operations Leonor Colon said, according to ESPN.
While other donations will be made to various mental health initiatives, it's great to see MLB and the union supporting the causes.
