MLB's No. 1 prospect Jackson Holliday makes Triple-A debut at 19 years old

On Sunday, Sep. 3, at 19 years old, SS/2B and Baltimore Orioles and MLB’s No. 1 prospect Jackson Holliday got promoted to Triple-A. Two days later, Tuesday, Sept. 5, he debuted with the team.

It is the third level of the minors Holliday has been promoted to during the 2023 season, with it being the fifth level of the minors he has achieved since being drafted first overall in the 2022 draft.

In his debut, he went 1-for-4 from the leadoff spot, getting a double and drawing a walk for a productive day at the plate. His OPS for the day finished at .900, right around where he was at the other three levels of the minors in 2023. While he made two fielding errors, he still has shown potential with the glove that does not just disappear.

Holliday has played 14 games at A-ball, 57 games at A+ and rocketed through Double-A with just 36 games played, never posting an OPS below .925 at any level. In the 107 games across the three levels before his Triple-A debut, he slashed .333/.451/.517 with 51 extra-base hits.

Starting the year ranked as MLB’s No. 12 prospect, the son of former MLB player Matt Holliday officially became the top recruit in baseball during the 2023 season after his successful stints at multiple levels.

With the Orioles in the thick of the playoff hunt, he likely will stay in Triple-A through the rest of the season but will make his debut to start the year in 2024, or he will quickly earn his promotion in the early stages of the new year. If he debuts to start 2024, it will continue the trend of early season in MLB history having at least one player aged 20 or younger to debut in the season.
