Nationals' SP Stephen Strasburg heading back to IL

Just days after making his first start of the 2022 season, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg is headed back to the injured list.

On Monday, Nationals' manager Dave Martinez announced that Strasburg would miss his scheduled start on Tuesday and be placed on the IL.

Martinez didn't discuss the specifics of Strasburg's injury but reported the three-time All-Star felt discomfort after throwing a bullpen session. Strasburg had an MRI on Monday. The results are still unknown.

Strasburg missed most of 2021 after being placed on the IL with a neck strain in June. He underwent season-ending surgery after being diagnosed with a neurogenic thoracic outlet condition.

Last Thursday, Strasburg returned to the mound for the Nationals, making his first start since June 1, 2021. Aside from striking out five batters in 4.2 innings, Strasburg's start didn't go well. He allowed seven earned runs off eight hits in a 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins.

While the Nationals await the results of Strasburg's MRI, Martinez said they'll continue to take the cautious approach.

"Right now, as I said all along, we're going to be as careful as possible with him and try to do everything right for Stephen and for this organization moving forward, Martinez said. "Right now, we're at those bumpy roads and we'll see what happens."

Strasburg has spent all 13 MLB seasons with the Nationals, drafted first overall by Washington in 2009. He's compiled a 113-62 record with a 3.24 ERA in 247 games.

The 33-year-old Strasburg ranks first all-time in Nationals/Montreal Expos franchise history in strikeouts (1,723) and second all-time in career wins (113).
