Nationals' Trea Turner ties record with third career cycle
Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner added his name to the record books multiple ways during Wednesday's home game against the Tampa Bay Rays played on his birthday.
According to an ESPN piece, Turner became the first MLB player since at least 1900 (the league's "modern era") to hit for a cycle (single, double, triple, home run) on his birthday:
Additionally, Turner tied an MLB record by becoming only the fourth player with three career cycles in the modern era. Adrian Beltre, Babe Herman and Bob Meusel previously accomplished the feat. John Reilly also did it in the 1800s.
Turner completed his third cycle via a line drive to deep right field that allowed him to reach third base for a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning. Washington easily defeated Tampa Bay 15-6, a result that served as the figurative icing on Turner's cake.
According to Jessica Camerato of the MLB website, Turner notched his other cycles against the Colorado Rockies on April 25, 2017, and July 23, 2019.
