The New York Yankees made two major front office hires this week.

First, they secured the smarts of former San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean; and then they brought in former Montreal Expos and New York Mets decision-maker Omar Minaya as advisors.

Evidently, they want to surround general manager Brian Cashman with as much experience and knowledge as possible.

Sabean, specifically, was still tied to the Giants’ organization even though he didn’t really make the calls anymore, but decided to take the chance to return to the team that gave him a chance to start his MLB involvement back in 1985 as a scout.

He explained why he chose to join the Yankees.

“Brian Sabean said he expected to do more and be more involved in his advisory role with the Giants, but it didn’t turn out that way. He decided to let his contract expire on Oct. 31 and reached out to the Yankees, who offered ‘a better opportunity’ that fit his family needs,” Maria I. Guardado, the Giants’ beat writer for MLB.com, tweeted.

In the end, all Sabean wants is to be involved in an exciting project; to feel needed.

After all, the man was the architect of the Yankees’ 1990s dynasty and the Giants’ one from 2010 to 2014.

“I’m just so thankful that I’m relevant enough to get this opportunity,” Sabean said. “At my age, it’s all about being wanted and needed, and I feel that here with the Yankees,” Guardado also wrote with some additional quotes.

Sabean is a masterful scout and talent evaluator, an area in which the Yanks can definitely improve.

He and Cashman go way back, too, and his role should be much more important in the Bronx.
