The New York Mets took care of business Monday night in the first of three with the Cincinnati Reds. Anchored by dominance from Chris Bassitt, the Mets won 5-1 at Citi Field. This win makes it four in a row for the Mets. The team now stands with a remarkable record of 71-39 and is 13-2 over their last 15 games. In the NL East, the Mets currently have a seven-game lead on the Atlanta Braves.

Eight excellent innings from Chris Bassitt

The Mets were led to victory by Bassitt in this one. He pitched eight innings and threw 114 pitches. Bassitt gave up eight hits and one walk. The one run allowed was not earned. Basssitt recorded eight strikeouts. Following a five-game series in four days, the Mets could have used a long starting outing from Bassitt. For him to go eight innings with one run allowed, giving the bullpen the rest needed, was tremendous from Bassitt. Bassitt is now 9-7 with a 3.39 ERA on the year.

Adam Ottavino was brought in for the final three outs. While it was not pretty, he got the job done without giving up a run. Ottavino did allow a hit and walk. He threw 19 pitches but ultimately got the Mets the three needed outs to finish the game.

Good enough night from the Mets lineup

The Mets batting order totaled seven hits in game one of this three-game set. Two-hit games were had by both Starling Marte and Daniel Vogelbach. Jeff McNeil, Tyler Naquin, and James McCann all had a hit.

Marte drove in two runs with a home run in the first inning to get the Mets going. Naquin continues to succeed since being acquired by the Mets. He drove in two runs with a two-out triple in the eighth inning. It gave Edwin Diaz the night off with a four-run lead and Ottavino more breathing room for the ninth. The other run batted in came from Vogelbach.

For the Mets to win game two, getting hits from Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso will be key.
