The New York Yankees are beginning to embrace a youth movement in their infield, or so it would appear.

On Sunday, the club announced that top prospect Anthony Volpe, 21, will make the team’s Opening Day roster. While the Yankees have yet to officially turn in their first lineup card of the season, Volpe's presence on the roster strongly indicates that he will work the team’s starting shortstop upcoming.

The Yankees confirmed the major roster call by posting a video of manager Aaron Boone informing Volpe that his strong spring had secured him a spot on the big league team.

The Yankees gave Volpe a chance to win the job in competition with returning starter Isiah Kiner-Falefa heading into spring training, but by all accounts, the team has been surprised by his consistency and immediate comfort level in exhibition play. Volpe hit .314 with three home runs in spring ball, winning over the organization in the process.

A first-round pick in the 2019 draft, Volpe entered 2023 as MLB.com's No. 5 overall prospect in baseball. The Yankees will open their regular-season schedule at home against the San Francisco Giants on March 30.
