The Boston Red Sox can't seem to catch a break right now.

Boston had a disappointing 2023 season and responded with a few important additions this offseason. The Red Sox signed veteran starter Lucas Giolito in free agency, but he could end up missing the entire 2024 season due to injury.

The Red Sox traded Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for exciting, young infielder Vaughn Grissom to fill the club's hole at second base, but he also is injured. Grissom has been dealing with a groin injury and is "unlikely" to be ready for Opening Day, according to the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.

"Grissom remains unlikely for Opening Day," Abraham said. "But not a long-term issue."

The 23-year-old hasn't been able to appear in a game yet for the Red Sox this spring and it's unclear when he will be able to do so. It's positive that Abraham said the issue won't be long-term, but it's disappointing he has been dealing with an injury.

Boston has had a polarizing offseason, to say the least. The Red Sox did make some intriguing pickups in Giolito, Grissom, and outfielder Tyler O'Neill, but the club still has low expectations.

The Red Sox's starting rotation remains the club's biggest question mark, but second base also was an issue. Grissom seems like he will end up being the answer and help fill the hole, but it will be a little bit until we are able to see him fully in action.
