The Chicago Cubs demoted infielder Nick Madrigal to Triple-A Iowa on May 25. He’s been killing it ever since.
The Iowa Cubs saw its game with the Columbus Clippers on Thursday suspended in the bottom of the 10th inning, but not before Madrigal was 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored while batting second in the order. The Cubs and the Clippers were tied, 8-8.
Madrigal’s game included this hit that drove in a run to give Iowa a 4-3 lead at the time.
The Cubs sent him to Iowa to get him more at-bats amid a crowded infield situation for the Cubs. Manager David Ross likes Madrigal’s improvement in the field this season.
Madrigal is having a great stretch as he tries to work his way back to the Windy City. He’s batted .500 (14-for-28) with one home run and nine RBI in his first five games.
Since the 10-for-20 start he's batting .477 with a home run and seven RBI in eight games.
The former first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2018 got off to a sub-par start for the Cubs this season, as he batted .247 with no home runs and nine RBI.
He didn’t show much improvement from 2022, during which he played 59 games in his first season for the Cubs. He batted .249, but he didn’t hit a home run and drove in seven. In fact, Madrigal hasn’t hit a home run in the Majors since he was with the White Sox in 2021.
He hit a home run during his first week with the Iowa Cubs.
The Iowa Cubs will play St. Paul this week.
