Nike's self-lacing shoe comes to life on "Back To The Future" Day

Social media and pop culture hubs exploded on Wednesday with the hype and fanfare surrounding “Back To The Future” Day.

No, the real-life October 21, 2015 doesn’t have flying cars and readily-available hoverboards and Marty McFly’s hologram ball cap isn’t a fashion staple..yet. And no, the Cubs didn’t just win the World Series.

But thanks to Nike, there is one element of the cult classic film franchise that has come to life—the Nike Mag that laces up by itself.

Nike released a statement Wednesday that the self-lacing sneaker is in fact a thing. The statement explains:

“This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.”

So who was the first individual to be gifted with these technologically advanced kicks? Who else but Michael J. Fox himself.

The encompassing allure of the shoe isn’t lost on the sports world. Royals’ pitcher Jeremy Guthrie showed world that via Twitter before taking the field for Game 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Not surprisingly, the high-tech shoe isn't going to be available on department store shelves. It will, however, be available via an auction that gives back to Fox's charity. The release from Nike explains:

The 2015 Nike Mag is a limited edition release. It will only be available via auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The specific details on the auctions will be posted to Nike News and via Twitter @Nike in spring 2016.

Now, someone needs to invent the self-drying jacket. That would help out Californians quite a bit with a pending El Nino on the docket for this winter.
