In a story that's sure to make Seattle Mariners' fans upset, now-retired major league reliever Trevor May said he wanted to play for the M's in 2023, but money stood in the way.

Per Mariners' fan-favorite "X" account @MarinerMuse:

On Twitch, Kelso's Trevor May said he tried to play on the Mariners in 2023.

"I didn't fit because of the nature of what my contract would've been, and that pisses me off, because I would've taken whatever to play on that team."

May had a 3.21 ERA and 21 saves for Oakland.

May, who retired Monday, said he waited to try to play for the 2023 Mariners, to the point where he messed up negotiations with another MLB team while he was delaying. May ended up signing a 1-year, $7 million deal with Oakland.

While May was good this season, and had a good career, not having him on the roster isn't what's going to infuriate M's fans. It's that hearing something as little as $7 million stood in between the M's and a valuable player. Seattle missed the playoffs this year by 1.0 game and fans were mad all year about the lack of investment in the major league roster.

After getting to the ALDS in 2022, the only major league signings the M's made were AJ Pollock and Kolten Wong, who both fizzled out and didn't end up on the roster at the end of the season.

May went 4-4 this past season, in addition to those 21 saves. Considering the A's won only 50 games this year, he was heavily involved in 50 percent of the team's victories.

He spent nine years in the major leagues actually playing, but was around the majors for a decade. He pitched six years for the Twins, but missed all of 2017. He then pitched two years for the Mets and one for the A's.
