The University of Oklahoma baseball team will open the 2024 season at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and play 27 home games at L. Dale Mitchell Park as part of a 53-game schedule announced Thursday by seventh-year head coach Skip Johnson. The 2024 Big 12 conference slate was announced in conjunction with the league office.
The Sooners, coming off their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will open the 2024 season at the Shriners Children’s College Baseball Showdown, Feb. 16-18, at Globe Life Field, home of the 2023 World Series Champion Texas Rangers. OU will face Oregon, Tennessee and Nebraska in the event. Oklahoma has posted an 11-8 record at the Arlington, TX, ballpark since the start of the 2021 season.
Oklahoma will make its home debut with a three-game series Feb. 23-25 against Wright State at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners will also play a multi-team event in Las Vegas, March 1-3, the details of which will be announced at a later date.
“We will play a very challenging schedule against high quality competition in 2024,” Johnson said. “We’re excited about this slate and the opportunities it provides for our team. We’ll open the season with six of our first seven games against teams that played in the postseason last year and that level of competition will carry through May. We’ll face a new challenge this year, playing 10 conference weekends. We know this league is one of the best in the country and a battle week-in and week-out. We’re thrilled to be able to start the year in a great environment and ballpark at Globe Life Field, and we can’t wait to see our fans pack L. Dale Mitchell Park all season.”
With 13 baseball schools now in the Big 12, the conference schedule will run 30 games over 10 weekend series. Previously, the Big 12 baseball schedule was 24 games over eight weekends. This year, teams will play 10 of 12 possible opponents in league play. The top 10 teams in the regular season standings will advance to the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, which will be held May 21-25 at Globe Life Field.
Oklahoma opens Big 12 conference play in the fourth week of the season, March 8-10, against conference newcomer UCF at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners will also play home conference series against West Virginia (March 22-24), Kansas State (April 12-14), Texas (April 26-28) and Baylor (May 10-12). OU will face TCU (March 15-17), Oklahoma State (April 5-7), league newcomer BYU (April 18-20), Texas Tech (May 3-5) and league newcomer Cincinnati (May 16-18) on the road in league play.
Oklahoma is slated to face premier opponents in non-conference midweek contests, including Dallas Baptist (Feb. 20 in Dallas and March 19 in Norman), Oklahoma State (March 12 in Norman), Oral Roberts (March 26 in Norman and April 30 in Tulsa), Wichita State (March 5 and April 23 in Norman and April 2 in Wichita), UT Arlington (March 13 in Arlington and April 9 in Norman) and Xavier (May 14 in Cincinnati).
The Sooners open with four games away from home at the Shriners Children’s College Baseball Showdown and a road game at Dallas Baptist, then face Wright State at Mitchell Park. Following the multi-team event in Las Vegas, OU will play five straight home games against Wichita State, UCF and Oklahoma State.
Following a trip through north Texas with a game at UTA and a series at TCU, Oklahoma plays a stretch of eight straight home games that includes its only consecutive home or away weekends of the season. The Sooners host DBU, West Virginia, Oral Roberts and Lamar (March 28-30). The Lamar series is a three-game non-conference set during OU’s league bye weekend.
Road contests at Wichita State and a series at Oklahoma State are followed by a home game against UTA and a series against Kansas State in Norman. The Sooners travel to Provo, Utah, to face BYU then return home to play Wichita State and Texas. It will be the Longhorns’ first visit to Norman since the 2018 season.
OU then plays a midweek game at Oral Roberts and a series against Texas Tech in Lubbock. Oklahoma’s home finale will be May 10-12 against Baylor. The Sooners close the regular season with four games in Cincinnati – a single contest at Xavier and a series at Cincinnati.
NCAA Regionals are set for May 31-June 3 and Super Regionals will be played June 7-10 at campus sites, and the College World Series will run June 14-24 in Omaha, NE.
