Orioles' Chris Davis lost for season after hip surgery

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has missed the first month-and-a-half of the regular season because of injury issues and won't be back anytime soon. 

Per Thomas Harrigan of the official MLB website, Orioles general manager Mike Elias announced Wednesday that Davis has undergone season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left hip. It's the latest setback for the 35-year-old who has seen his offensive production dwindle over the past handful of campaigns and who hasn't batted even .200 since 2017. 

Davis will look to return for spring training ahead of playing out the final season of a seven-year, $161 million contract the Orioles would likely prefer to trade away this winter if they could find a single buyer. 

"Any baseball player, they deal with things and they play through things over the course of seasons and years, and ultimately you get to a point where you come to the conclusion that something needs to be done about it," Elias told reporters, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). 

Davis hit a paltry .115 with no home runs and one RBI in 16 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and dealt with left knee patellar tendinitis throughout the summer.
