Orioles' Trey Mancini receives standing ovations in home return from cancer

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 MLB season after he was diagnosed with colon cancer but returned to Oriole Park at Camden Yards for Thursday's home opener against the Boston Red Sox.

In the bottom of the first inning of Thursday's contest, Mancini walked to home plate for his first at-bat and received a standing ovation from fans, teammates, and members of the Red Sox:

As noted by an ESPN piece, Mancini reached base via a fielder's choice and then scored on Ryan Mountcastle's two-run home run.

Boston won the game 7-3.

Mancini also received a warm welcome during the pregame festivities:

"I think Trey is putting a ton of pressure on himself so far, and I think that he’s been dealing with a lot, talking a lot about it," Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said before Thursday's game, per Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun. "I think he just really wants to go play. I know he’s going to really enjoy this moment. He’s going to have his family here. It’s a big deal for him to play in front of the home fans again. I just want him to relax and play really and enjoy being in the big leagues again."
