The Padres welcome the Giants for an NL West showdown at Petco Park. It wasn't all that long ago that these two teams were neck and neck in the Wild Card race but a tough August has doomed the Friars and has the club clinging on to slim playoff hopes.

San Diego will run Pedro Avila (0-1, 2.63 ERA) to the mound as a hybrid opener for the third time this season. The Giants counter with veteran right-hander Jakob Junis (4-3, 4.09 ERA) as their opener.
