Padres prospect Jorge Mateo tests positive for coronavirus, has symptoms

Roughly one week after the San Diego Padres completed a trade with the Oakland Athletics to acquire infield prospect Jorge Mateo, the 25-year-old tested positive for the coronavirus.

Per ABC 10News San Diego, manager Jayce Tingler confirmed the news on Wednesday and said Mateo experienced losses of smell and taste, common coronavirus symptoms. Tingler added Mateo is improving:

"He has not been to the ballpark, on the field, locker room, or anything like that. The reports are coming back that the smell and taste is starting to come back to him. He is feeling a little better."

Mateo and outfielder Tommy Pham are the two Padres players known to have tested positive for the virus as the club prepares for the start of the 60-game regular season. Pham hasn't rejoined the team as of Wednesday evening.

According to Baseball-Reference, Mateo led the minor leagues with 14 triples in 2019.
