A.J. Preller has signed a couple of arms for the bullpen this offseason. However, the Padres still need help in the outfield and starting pitching.

Michael A. Taylor has not been talked about much this offseason but could be a good fit for the Friars. MLB Insider Robert Murray says the Padres are interested in the veteran outfielder.

Among the other outfielders that the Mets expressed interest in included Michael A. Taylor, sources say, who is now being linked to teams in southern California. A reunion between Taylor and the Twins should not be ruled out, with other teams interested in the 32-year-old outfielder including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres.

A premier defensive centerfielder, Taylor could help the Padres replace Trent Grisham. While not known for his offense, he would be a slight upgrade over Grisham at the plate.

In 2023, Taylor slashed .220/.288/.442 with 21 home runs and a 94 OPS+. He strikes out more than just about anyone and does not walk much. However, his speed makes him dangerous on the base paths and rangy in the outfield.

He's coming off a two-year, $9 million contract, so the Padres could sign him for fairly cheap. He'd likely bat somewhere in the bottom third of the order, and he has enough power in his bat to make him a threat.

It would not be a flashy signing, but it could be savvy for a team looking to lower salary with as many needs as the Padres.
