Pedro Martinez asked Mets aces Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer to 'get it done for me'

Hall-of-Fame pitcher and analyst Pedro Martinez featured for the New York Mets from 2005 through 2008 and was part of the squad that lost the 2006 National League Championship Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. 

Martinez ended that season injured and never again came as close to helping the Mets earn a spot in the World Series. As an organization, the Amazins haven't hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy since the 1986 team famously stunned the Boston Red Sox, and Martinez left no doubt over this past weekend that he still thinks about what could have been during his Mets tenure. 

As Anthony DiComo noted for the MLB website, Martinez attended the Mets' "Old-Timers' Day" that was celebrated before and during Saturday's 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. The right-hander took time to enter the team's clubhouse and make a special request to aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. 

"I don’t normally ask for much, but this time I did," Martinez explained about that interaction. "I said, 'Can you get it done for me?' Because I felt like it was unfinished business."

Meanwhile, third baseman Ray Knight of the '86 Mets offered high praise for current manager Buck Showalter. 

"They play the game right," Knight remarked. "When you’re playing under Buck, you’re going to do things correct. He doesn’t accept anything but that. There’s a lot of talent on this ballclub. They’ve got power. They’ve got speed. They’ve got a lineup that’s deep. And anytime you have Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom 1-2, that’s going to win you a lot of series. I’ve watched the Mets. For the first time in a long time, I feel like there’s just something special there." 

The 82-47 first-place Mets began Monday holding a three-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East standings.
