Phillies 2B Jean Segura needs surgery on fractured finger, out 10-12 weeks

The Philadelphia Phillies were already having a lousy start to June ahead of Wednesday's home game against the San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia has lost five in a row and seven of eight contests, and things only got worse when the club placed second baseman Jean Segura on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right finger.

It turns out Segura won't be returning to the lineup anytime soon.

Per ESPN and the MLB website, Phillies manager Joe Girardi confirmed that Segura will require surgery to repair the busted digit and is expected to be out of action for roughly 10 to 12 weeks. Segura suffered the setback while attempting a bunt during Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Giants.

Segura exited Tuesday's contest slashing .275/.324/.407 with six home runs and 19 RBI across 44 games this season. According to ESPN stats, the two-time All-Star leads the Phillies with eight stolen bases on the campaign.

He's now on track to be out through at least early August.

It's yet another brutal blow for a Philadelphia side that was swept by the division-rival New York Mets over the weekend. The red-hot Mets improved to 35-17 via Wednesday's win over the Washington Nationals and began the evening holding a whopping 13-game lead over the 21-29 Phillies in the National League East standings.
