In what was most likely the most winnable game of the season, the Diamondbacks were one out away from a sweep as they blew a 5-0 lead against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Zac Gallen began the afternoon with five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He then exited the ballgame in the sixth inning with two runners on base, both of whom scored.
On the offensive side, the Diamondbacks came out of the gates red-hot, including a four-run third inning. Part of this explosion came from veteran Evan Longoria’s 422 foot two-run homerun.
However, this would be the last run the Diamondbacks would score all afternoon, as they were then shutout for seven consecutive innings.
Included in this stretch were back-to-back innings of leaving the bases loaded. Moreso, it was likely the sixth inning that will haunt them the most, as the Phillies walked three straight batters to start the inning. This was followed by two strikeouts and a groundout.
After failing to add to their lead, the Diamondbacks would allow three runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
But it was ultimately a two-run homer from struggling Trea Turner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that would send the game into extra innings.
The Phillies would go on to walk it off in the 10th, Jose Ruiz was credited with the loss. Ruiz also allowed the two-run homerun to Turner an inning prior, but since the Diamondbacks used up all of their high-leveraged relief pitchers earlier in the series, they did not have many other choices than to send Ruiz out for one more.
It would have been the first sweep of the season for the Diamondbacks, but instead they will end the nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record.
While this is still an impressive stretch, there is no question that this loss will be difficult to shake off during the off day on Thursday.
Next for the D-backs is a three-game series starting on Friday against the Boston Red Sox. Brandon Pfaadt is scheduled to start with the first pitch for 6:40, back at Chase Field.
