The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they have claimed RHP Yoan López off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves. In a corresponding move, the Phillies designated Roman Quinn for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

López, 28, made his major league debut in 2018 and has spent four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2021, he appeared in just 13 games for the D-backs, possessing a 6.57 ERA, 5.12 FIP, and 13 strikeouts across 12.1 innings pitched, and spent the rest of his time in the minors. After struggling in 2019, 2020, and 2021, Arizona traded him to the Braves in exchange for Deivi Estrada and he was assigned to Triple-A.

López did not throw a pitch in the majors for the Braves after being acquired by them in May 2021. He is a career 4.25 ERA reliever, with 82 strikeouts in 101.2 innings, and just a 0.2 WAR.

Quinn, who ruptured his Achilles tendon during a game in Tampa Bay in May, was designated for assignment to make room for López on the 40-man. Quinn made his major league debut with the Phillies in 2016, and over the course of five seasons, has dealt with a multitude of injuries.

In 178 games with Philadelphia, Quinn batted just .228/.306/.355, but his value lied in his speed; In fact, Quinn had more stolen bases (39) than RBI (38) while with the Phillies.

With the New York Mets signing Max Scherzer to a three-year, $130 million deal today, this move is incredibly anticlimactic in comparison. Let's hope there's some bigger, more exciting moves on the way.
