Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Phillies fans running out of patience with star acquisition's epic slump

Only a few months into Trea Turner's first season with the Philadelphia Phillies, the city's notoriously brutal fan base is beginning to run out of patience with the well-paid shortstop.

Following an 0-for-4 performance in the team's 10-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, Turner heard boos from the Citizens Bank Park crowd for the first time.

Since inking an 11-year, $300 million contract in the offseason, Turner has yet to resemble the prized free agent the Phillies thought they were getting. While it's still extremely early, Turner's struggles at the plate are alarming.

With four home runs and 10 RBI through 44 games, Turner has yet to surpass his production during just six epic games in the World Baseball Classic (4 HR, 10 RBI).

Turner is batting a disappointing .257/.302/.390 on the young season and has shown no recent signs of a breakout. After going 27-of-86 with six RBI, seven walks and 20 strikeouts through the first 20 games of the campaign, Turner is batting only .212 with four RBI, five walks and 35 K's over the last 24 games.

While Turner's struggles continue, so do those of the Phillies, who have dropped five straight and 11 of their last 16 games following Friday's thumping by the Cubs. The defending National League champions hold a 20-24 record.

There is still plenty of time for Turner to right the ship and get back in the good graces of Philly fans. After a disastrous start, though, it's clear the honeymoon is over.
