Phillies manager has funny explanation for star catcher's unique statistics

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson gave a funny explanation Wednesday morning as to why J.T. Realmuto's home vs. road batting averages were so different in 2023.

Realmuto and his wife, Alexis Taylor, have two daughters and two sons, with the oldest being five years old. The couple's second son was born in March, so it's been a busy season for the three-time All-Star on and off the field.

Realmuto is having a down season by his standards but is still one of the best hitting catchers in MLB and a productive member of a loaded Phillies lineup.

Through 406 at-bats covering 113 games, the 32-year-old has hit 27 doubles (which are his most since 2019) and knocked 15 home runs, but after posting a career-high 84 RBIs in 2022 he enters Wednesday with just 51 runs driven in. Realmuto also set a career-high with 21 stolen bases last year but despite the rule changes over the winter, he's currently at just 12 thefts.

His .251 batting average would be the worst of his career while his .313 on-base percentage and .766 OPS are the lowest since his first full big-league season in 2015.

Aside from the 101-point difference in batting average at home vs. away from Citizens Bank Park, Realmuto's other numbers on the road are significantly better across the board too. The two-time Gold Glove award winner has just two more plate appearances on the road this season, yet has 61 of his 102 hits, 10 of his 15 home runs and 116 of his 184 total bases outside of the City of Brotherly Love in 2023.
