Phillies manager provides shocking update on Bryce Harper's return

Nearly five months removed from undergoing Tommy John Surgery, two-time MVP Bryce Harper could potentially make his 2023 debut for the Philadelphia Phillies during the first week of May.

Initially expected to be out until at least the All-Star break, Harper could be the Phillies' designated hitter as soon as Tuesday, according to manager Rob Thomson.

Thomson said that Harper would have a follow-up appointment in Los Angeles with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday, with the hope that he's cleared to resume playing, per Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

"He's pretty geeked up about getting out there," Thomson said. "He's itching."

Last week, Thomson alluded to Monday being an important date for Harper, adding that once the doctor gives the go-ahead, he would start DH'ing not "too far after that." Thomson also revealed that Harper would forgo a rehab stint in the minors when cleared and rejoin the Phillies' lineup immediately.

Working like a madman to get back, Harper has made incredible strides in his rehab over the last month or so. In early April, Harper took a significant step, taking live batting practice for the first time since his surgery. Also, he's recently begun throwing from 60 feet and participating in sliding drills.

Harper's return could be coming at an ideal time for the Phillies, who are only 3.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves (18-9) for first in the National League East.

After a sluggish start without Harper and others, the Phillies appear to be turning the corner. Entering play on Sunday, Philadelphia had won 11 of their last 15 games, riding a four-game winning streak as they wrap up a World Series rematch with the Houston Astros.
