Phillies place two-time All-Star IF Jean Segura on IL with finger fracture

The Philadelphia Phillies have lost five in a row and are already 12.5 games back of the NL East-leading New York Mets. Entering Wednesday's action, though, the team ranked a solid seventh in all of baseball in stolen bases (30) and ninth in runs scored (224).

Philadelphia will have to get by without one of its biggest producers of steals and runs and hope to avoid falling farther behind in the division.

Segura leads the Phillies in stolen bases with eight and is slashing .275/.324/.407 with six home runs and 19 RBI through 44 games played in 2022 thus far. The infielder has scored 22 runs this year, his fourth in the City of Brotherly Love.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Segura made his big league debut with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in July 2012 but was soon traded to the Milwaukee Brewers as part of a package of players in exchange for six-time All-Star Zack Greinke. Segura remained with the Brewers through 2015, making his first All-Star team in 2013, before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in January 2016.

During his one season in the desert, he led the NL in at-bats (637) and hits (203), while finishing second in wins above replacement (6.4) and fifth in batting average (.319). In November 2016, Segura was traded again — this time to the Seattle Mariners — where he spent two seasons and made his second All-Star squad in 2018.
