Phillies sign Nick Castellanos to five-year, $100 million deal

The Phillies have loaded up with another top-level bat.

Philadelphia has agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract with All-Star outfielder Nick Castellanos. MLB Network's Jon Heyman was first to report that the two sides were close on a deal, while ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to announce they were in agreement. Heyman reported the figures.

It's the second big-time signing of an offensive player by the Phillies in recent days, as they reportedly reached an agreement with Kyle Schwarber earlier this week. Neither that deal or the Castellanos one has become official yet as they both are pending physicals.

Castellanos and Schwarber will form one of the league's top offensive trios along with Bryce Harper, the reigning MVP in the National League. Harper had been advocating for the Phillies to add a bat during post-lockout free agency, and they went out and got two superstars instead.

Last season was the best yet for Castellanos, as he made his first All-Star Game and hit over .300 for the first time as a big leaguer en route to Silver Slugger honors and a 12th place finish in MVP voting. He hit .309/.362/.576 with 34 homers and 100 RBI. He logged a 136 OPS+, meaning he was significantly better than the league average hitter (100).

Over a nine-year career, Castellanos has hit 168 homers and racked up 594 RBI with the Tigers, Cubs and Reds. He's logged a career line of .278/.329/.486 in that time.
