Darick Hall can be a valuable piece for the Philadelphia Phillies.
After all, he's a left-handed bat who hits for power and is an above average defensive player.
But the drawback is this: Hall sits behind Bryce Harper at first base, so playing time is going to be quite limited.
Hall is remaining positive in spring training and hopes to be part of the 26-man active roster when the 2024 season starts later this month.
"I mean, I'm here for a reason," the slugger told Matt Gelb of The Athletic. "You know what I mean? If they wanted to get rid of me, they would have. I think I fit in here. I think I have value to the team."
Hall began the 2023 season as the starting first baseman. But a thumb injury suffered in April was a setback, especially for his power.
He kept working and hit 12 home runs in August with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
If Hall doesn't earn a spot on the Phillies, he could be valuable to any Major League team.
It's really an ongoing audition for the whole league.
"Do I think I could get good opportunities somewhere else? Sure. But I believe that at some point my name will be called here, and if I'm not ready, I wouldn't feel good bout that."
Having Hall at Lehigh Valley would be very comforting if Harper sustains an injury or the Phillies need a designated hitter.
"Strange things happen," manager Rob Thomson said. "Who knows what's going to happen with that last guy on the roster once we get down to the end? Are we going to take a left-handed bat off the bench? Are we going to take one more extra left-handed hitting outfielder? Who knows? But he's just got to be himself."
Hall has always done just that.
The smile is planted on his face. It's easy to see how much he loves the game.
This is a win-win situation for the Phillies.
Hall is healthy and his work ethic is solid. Keep an eye on the slugger. He'll likely help the Phillies at some point this season.
