The Pittsburgh Pirates have reinforced their pitching staff by adding the recently-claimed Thomas Hatch to the active roster and recalling Colin Selby from Triple-A Indianapolis.
To make room on the roster for the two right-handers, pitchers Osvaldo Bido and Yerry De Los Santos were optioned to Triple-A.
Hatch, 28, was claimed off waivers by the Pirates from the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
He appeared in six games this season with Toronto and posted a 4.26 ERA with five walks and 10 strikeouts across 6.1 innings pitched.
In parts of four seasons, in Toronto, Hatch went 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 27 appearances (four starts). In 46.2 career innings, the 2016 third-rounder has allowed 51 hits, walked 26 and struck out 45.
Selby’s first appearance will mark his major league debut. The Pirates selected Selby in the 16th round of the 2018 draft out of Randolph-Macon College. Selby would be the third player all-time and the first since Paul Gilliford in 1967 from Randolph-Macon to appear in the big leagues.
With Indianapolis this season, Selby is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and six saves in 28 relief appearances. He’s allowed only 19 hits, but has walked 22 to go along with 41 strikeouts in 30.1 innings of work.
Bido last pitched for the Pirates on Monday night against the Atlanta Braves at PNC Park. In that game, Bido allowed four runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings pitched.
In his first go-around as a major leaguer, Bido was 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts) after being selected on June 14.
In 22 games out of the Pirates’ bullpen this season, De Los Santos has gone 1-1 with a respectable 3.33 ERA across 28.0 innings.
