When trying to come up with a player’s value, be it in money or in prospects, the market is usually the element defining his true worth.

In the specific case of Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, his current value on the trade market is high.

He has three seasons of team control remaining, he is young, good, and proven.

More importantly, at least two teams are dying for a quality outfielder, and free agency doesn’t have any enticing options anymore.

However, if the Pirates really want to flip him to another team, they might be overplaying their hand with their ridiculous demands.

According to Jon Heyman’s latest column, the team is asking for a “Juan Soto package”.

“Interested exec complains about asking price on Reynolds, who seems likely to stay for now,” Heyman tweeted.

Reynolds is very, very good and productive, but he is nowhere near Soto’s league.

Last year, the San Diego Padres sent multiple top-100 prospects to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Soto and Josh Bell.

Future stars such as MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell III, CJ Abrams, James Wood, and Jarlin Susana, plus major leaguer Luke Voit, were traded to the Nationals.

That’s a haul, and the Pirates want something similar.

The Texas Rangers have several pitching prospects such as Jack Leiter, Owen White and Kumar Rocker; while the New York Yankees are more position-player-heavy with Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, Oswald Peraza, and others.

Neither organization is currently willing to give up multiple of those guys, so the player seems destined to stay until something changes.
