Pirates designate veteran Todd Frazier for assignment

The Toddfather's stay with the Pittsburgh Pirates didn't last through the middle of May.

On Monday, the Pirates confirmed that they have designated veteran infielder Todd Frazier for assignment. In a corresponding roster move, Pittsburgh claimed outfielder Ben Gamel off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.

Frazier, who turned 35 years old in February, collected two hits in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Cubs but had gone only 3-for-35 at the plate with no home runs and four RBI in 13 games with Pittsburgh. He leaves the club batting .086 and looking like a shell of the player who earned a pair of All-Star nods while in his prime.

Frazier spent the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with the Texas Rangers and, later the New York Mets and slashed a combined .236/.302/.382 with four home runs and 12 RBI over 45 total games.

Gamel, meanwhile, batted .071 with one hit in 14 at-bats with Cleveland this season.
