When the Pittsburgh Pirates placed RHP Vince Velasquez on the 15-day IL with right-elbow inflammation after his start on May 4, people thought the worst.

After having discussions on the matter, it would seem like the Pirates have a more hopeful outlook than what might have been anticipated early on.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington spoke on his radio show on the Pirates radio network 93.7 The Fan and discussed Velasquez’s health.

“He’s getting closer, and he’s getting through his live BPs. We anticipate he’ll start a rehab assignment in Indianapolis by the end of the week barring something unforeseen. We will take it a step at a time. We want him to pitch at least once in Indy, and we’ll see how that goes. It could be a couple of times in Indy. He’s responded really well, and we will take it one step at a time.”

Cherington also gave an update on bullpen arm, Rob Zastryzny, who’s been on the IL with left-elbow discomfort after his appearance on April 15 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Rob Zastryzny is really close to his rehab assignment in Indy as well.”

The Pirates could use all the help they can get after losing 11 out of their last 12 games, and Velasquez has been a huge boost to this pitching staff since he picked it up towards the middle of April.
