Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes robbed of home run after forgetting to touch first base

Ke'Bryan Hayes thought he put up the first run in Tuesday's game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Thanks to an unfortunate error, he didn't

The Pirates third baseman hit a solo home run down the right-field line off of Walker Buehler, giving Pittsburgh an early 1-0 lead. Umpires took a while to make the call after the ball hit the foul pole but ruled it a home run by the time Hayes rounded second base.

The Dodgers challenged the call, and the replay revealed it was not a home run, but not for the reason you think. Hayes forgot to touch the base when he rounded first.

Umpires reversed the call and ruled Hayes out. It was a tough blow for the 24-year-old, who thought he had hit his third home run of the season in just his seventh game.

That was not the only error Hayes committed, though. During the third inning, he reached first base on a single to centerfield, but his baserunning proved costly. Pirates centerfielder Bryan Reynolds hit a fly ball to left field that AJ Pollock caught for the second out of the inning. Hayes made it to second base but was tagged out after falling off the bag.

Hayes is still learning the ropes, but he'll have to be better if the Pirates hope to climb out of the hole they're in. Pittsburgh is last in the NL Central with a 23-36 record following a Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers.
