PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Mike Burrows underwent UCL reconstruction surgery on Wednesday and will be out 14-16 months.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas, Texas — the same doctor who performed the same surgery on JT Brubaker earlier this month.
Burrows, who is considered the Pirates’ ninth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was with Triple-A Indianapolis when the injury occurred.
In two starts this season with Indianapolis, Burrows posted a 2.70 ERA through 6.2 innings. For his career, the 2018 11th-round draft pick is 9-11 with a 3.34 ERA and 232 strikeouts in 207.2 innings across 54 appearances (51 starts).
Burrows looked to be on track to make his big league debut as some point this season with the Pirates. For Pittsburgh, their starting pitching depth continued to take a hit as both Burrows and Brubaker will be out all of this year and at least part of next season.
The timeline for the right-hander puts a possible return at sometime around mid-to-late summer next year.
