After being added to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ taxi squad on Tuesday, Quinn Priester was recalled to the active roster prior to Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
In a corresponding move, fellow right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
This will be Priester’s second stint with the Pirates this season. In his first taste of the big leagues, Priester pitched to a 2-2 record with a 9.10 ERA across six starts.
After he was optioned back to Triple-A Indianapolis, Priester fared much better and saw an uptick in velocity. In four appearances with Indy after his demotion, he posted a 2.66 ERA and struck out 32 batters while allowing 14 hits in 20.1 innings pitched.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton indicated on Tuesday that Priester could be used as a traditional starting pitcher or as a bulk reliever, something he did twice in Triple-A this season.
Bolton has shuffled up and down quite a bit between the Pirates and their Triple-A affiliate this season.
On the year in Pittsburgh, the right-hander was 1-0 with a 6.52 ERA in 14 appearances out of the Pirates’ bullpen. Bolton logged 19.1 innings, walked 15 batters and struck out 21.
With Indianapolis this season, Bolton has gone 2-4 with a save in 31 appearances, two of which were starts.
