Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton argues with the umpire Ray Acevedo-USA TODAY Sports

Pirates reliever, manager suspended for Manny Machado bean ball

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton and relief pitcher Angel Perdomo were both suspended by Major League Baseball on Wednesday for a bean-ball incident that took place late in their loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Perdomo has been suspended for three games while Shelton was given a one-game ban.

Neither is appealing their suspension, with Shelton serving his during Wednesday's series finale against the Padres.

Everything unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Perdomo intentionally threw at Padres star Manny Machado and was immediately ejected from the game.

It happened just one pitch after San Diego's Juan Soto hit a long home run off of Perdomo and admired it at home plate with a very long look. Perdomo was clearly not happy about that and took out his frustration on Machado on the very next pitch.

The Padres were not happy with Perdomo after the game, with Machado specifically calling out a lack of respect among players.

The Padres broadcast crew also touched on the most important point -- if you do not want people celebrating their home runs against you, make better pitches and do not allow home runs. This is the big leagues.

There are no mercy rules or sportsmanship awards, here. Everybody is making a lot of money to be in a highly emotional and competitive environment. Sometimes those emotions will come out in a celebratory manner. And as Perdomo showed, sometimes that leads to emotions of anger and frustration.
