The Chicago Cubs have a need for a third baseman after Jeimer Candelario signed with the Cincinnati Reds. While it was expected that Candelario was going to be on the move, the official signing made it an even bigger priority for the Cubs to land someone who can play third base.
There are names available for Chicago to pursue, including two-time Platinum Glove winner and former All-Star Matt Chapman.
Chapman is expected to get a deal within the $150 million range for around five-seven years. If that's the case, the Cubs' front office might be priced out. Reports have indicated that they're willing to spend, but $150 million might be too steep of a price for a player like Chapman.
However, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reiterates that the team has a need for a player of Chapman's caliber after losing Candelario and could make a play to acquire him.
"Chapman’s market is a bit murkier. The Blue Jays could certainly bring him back to Toronto, while the Cubs have a need after losing Jeimer Candelario via free agency."
The elite defender hit 17 home runs last year while slashing .240/.330/.424 on his way to posting a 4.4 WAR season. There have been concerns in the past with Chapman at the plate, despite some promising signs last season.
He posted an average exit velocity in the 98th percentile, an average barrel% in the 98th percentile, and a hard-hit% in the 100th percentile, according to Baseball Savant.
While other metrics lacked, Chapman has shown enough offensively in the past to indicate he could be a good signing and he fits the defensive mold that Chicago is looking for amongst their infield.
