Hurston Waldrep was born in Cairo, Georgia, on March 1, 2002. He played high school baseball at Thomasville High School in Thomasville, GA. He was the 14th-ranked RHP and the 44th-ranked overall player in Georgia. At Thomasville, he finished 23-9 and won three 1-AA start titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Thorpe was ranked the 165th RHP in the country and the 489th overall player. He committed to play college baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Where Did Hurston Waldrep Go to College?

In Waldrep’s first season at Southern Mississippi, he appeared in 11 games, going 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA, and struck out 16 batters in 16.1 innings. In his second season, he became a starter, making 17 starts and going 6-2 with a 3.20 Era and 140 strikeouts in 90 innings. In 2023, he transferred to Florida, and for the Gators, he made 19 starts, going 10-3 with a 4.16 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 101.2 innings; the Gators made the College World Series he started game two going 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits; he walked six and struck out two in the Gators 24-4 win.

Waldrep was the 12th-ranked college prospect entering the draft and the 19th overall prospect. He was drafted with the 24th overall pick in the 2023 draft by the Atlanta Braves.

Waldrep shot right up through the Braves system, pitching at Single-A Augusta, High-A Rome, Double-A Mississippi, and Triple-A Gwinnett, making eight starts, going 0-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 29.1 innings.

ITD ranks Waldrep as the 95th overall prospect and the Braves second ranked prospect. He is expected to start 2023 at Triple-A Gwinnett.
