Matt Shaw was born on November 6th, 2001 in Brimfield, Massachusetts. He started his high school career at Wilbraham & Monson Academy before he ended up transferring to Worcester Academy. He was the ninth overall-ranked player in Massachusetts and the third overall shortstop in Massachusetts. Shaw wasn’t a top recruit coming out of high school, but eventually went on to Play for the University of Maryland.

Matt Shaw attended the University of Maryland where in his Freshman year he played in 45 games with 16 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, seven stolen bases, and scoring 42 runs. Shaw during his first college year slashed .332/.409/.544 with an On-base percentage of .952. That summer he played for Amsterdam in the Perfect Game Collegiate League playing in 35 games where he slashed .369/.469/.689 with an on-base percentage of 1.158. He had 12 doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBIs, and 14 steals during his time with Amsterdam. In his Sophomore year at Maryland Shaw played in 60 games where he slashed .290/.381/.604 with an on-base percentage of .986. He had 11 doubles, 22 home runs, 67 RBIs, 12 steals, and 34 walks that season. That Summer he played for Bourne in the Cape Cod League playing in 36 games slashing .360/.432/.574 with an on-base percentage of 1.006. He had 28 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 19 RBIs, 21 steals, and walked 18 times. Shaw won the MVP for the Cape Cod league this year. His Junior year at Maryland Shaw played in 62 games slashing .341/.445/.697 with an on-base percentage of 1.142 during those 62 games. He had 80 runs scored, 20 doubles, one triple, 24 home runs, 69 RBIs, 18 steals, and walked 43 times that year earning him Big Ten Conference Player of the Year.

Shaw played three games for the Cubs Arizona Complex League slashing .500/.636/1.000 with an on-base percentage of 1.636 in 11 at-bats. While playing for South Bend in the Midwest League Shaw continued his success slashing .393/.427/.655 with an OBP of 1.082. He played in 20 games for South Bend with 14 runs scored, four doubles, three triples, four home runs, 18 RBIs, seven steals and four walks. Shaw finished his first Major League season with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League where he slashed .292/.329/.523 with an OBP of .852 in 15 games played.
