Player Review: Dylan Dodd has a bright future

Dylan Dodd had a whirlwind of a season in 2023. Dodd was drafted in round three by the Braves in 2021. In just three seasons on the farm, Dodd made his way to Atlanta. What a culture shock to go from Southeast Missouri State, a Division I FCS school, to the MLB. 

Dodd did not have the best year in Gwinnett, but it was his first time playing in AAA. He finished 4-6 with a 5.91 ERA with 67 strikeouts and 30 walks in 74.2 innings. Atlanta ran into issues with injuries when it came to their starting pitching and that resulted in the Braves calling Dodd up to make his first start on April 4th against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Dodd hurled a five-inning gem as he got his first win as a major league pitcher. He gave up six hits and one run as he struck out three and walked none. His other six starts were not as kind to him. He went 1-2 with an 8.66 ERA in those starts. He walked 13 and struck out 12 as walks became a huge issue for him. 

I think Dodd may spend some more time in Gwinnett working on pitch location but I do believe that he has a bright future.

Dylan Dodd's contract status

Dodd is in his first year of contractual control, so he's making the league minimum, $720,000. Of note, he only gets that amount for days he is on the active roster - during his time in Gwinnett, he receives a significantly lower amount.

Of particular note, Dodd did not spend enough time with the big-league club in 2023 to lose rookie eligibility, so were he to spend the 2024 season with the club, he would be eligible for Rookie of the Year awards.
