Rangers designate slugger Khris Davis for assignment

Khris Davis' stint with the rebuilding Texas Rangers appears to have already come to an end.

Per ESPN and the MLB website, Texas designated the outfielder and designated hitter for assignment on Tuesday. In a corresponding roster move, the Rangers recalled infielder/outfielder Eli White from Triple-A Round Rock.

Davis, 33, led all of MLB with 48 home runs for the 2018 season but has seen his offensive production plummet since then. The Oakland Athletics traded him to Texas in February, and he was hitting a paltry .157 with two home runs and five RBI in 22 games before this latest development. He missed more than a month earlier this spring with a strained left quad.

The Rangers now have seven days to trade or release Davis. He could also accept a demotion to the minor leagues.

Texas began Tuesday evening at 23-38 overall and in last place in the American League West, so it's understandable that the Rangers would have little patience with an underperforming veteran seemingly past his prime.
