Rangers set to send Corey Seager on rehab assignment

Already finding themselves in first place in the AL West, the Texas Rangers lineup could be getting stronger soon. According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Corey Seager is set to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday.

Seager has been out since straining his hamstring on April 11.

Texas’s offense has been carrying the team so far and it’s been a group effort. Adolis Garcia has a .260/.329/.530 line with nine home runs and a league-leading 36 RBI. Marcus Semien is hitting .286/.377/.466 and rookie Josh Jung has added eight home runs.

Ezequiel Duran has also been tremendous, hitting .343/.378/.521 while stepping in directly for Seager at shortstop. He’ll be the most directly impacted player, defensively, with Seager’s return but his versatility – he can handle second base, third, shortstop, and both corner outfield spots – will help keep him in the lineup regularly.

Texas has spent big the last two offseasons. Offensively, Seager is the premier piece the team brought in (10-year, $325 million contract aside) and despite the career-high 33 home runs it was largely a down year at the plate in 2022. His .240 BABIP and slash line of .245/.317/.455 were all career lows. He struck out more than 100 times for the first time in four seasons.

Initial estimates were that Seager would miss about four weeks, so he appears to be right on track with that timeline. Despite last year’s struggles, Texas will be glad to have their offensive leader back on the field and healthy.
