Rangers SP Max Scherzer did the most Max Scherzer thing ever during simulated outing

Texas Rangers starter Max Scherzer looks more and more like himself as he battles back from a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve in September.

While Scherzer hasn't pitched in over three weeks, he threw a simulated game at Camden Yards on Friday, demonstrating the qualities that should make Rangers fans hopeful for a return from the ace against the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Division Series. According to reporters gathered to watch Scherzer throw, the three-time Cy Young Award winner was waving off nonexistent infielders and arguing balls and strikes.

Scherzer suffered a teres major strain in his throwing shoulder during his last start on Sept. 12 against the Toronto Blue Jays. While the injury was a significant blow to the Rangers rotation at the time, neither the team nor Scherzer officially ruled out a return at some point during the postseason.

After throwing for a second straight day, Scherzer sounded cautiously optimistic about assuming some role for the Rangers against the Orioles.

"It's all hands on deck, you know, I get it," Scherzer said via Mark Viviano of WJZ-TV. "I'll do anything for the team to be able to go out there."

Meanwhile, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy threw cold water on the thought of Scherzer starting a game in the ALDS, but said, "Who knows," while speaking with reporters ahead of his simulated game.

"He's determined to find a way - we will take a look at it," Bochy said via Abby Jones of Bally Sportswest. "I don't rule anything out. I've seen guys come out early."

Since joining the Rangers at the trade deadline, Scherzer hasn't looked like the ace he's been in the past, going 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts. However, with 27 career playoff appearances (22 starts), he would be an invaluable addition to the Rangers staff, especially against an Orioles offense that finished fourth in the AL with 807 runs scored during the regular season.
