Rays OF Harold Ramirez suffers broken thumb after getting hit by pitch

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Harold Ramírez suffered a broken thumb when he was hit by a pitch in the first inning of a Sunday game against the Baltimore Orioles, according to multiple reports. He will reportedly be re-evaluated by the team in two weeks.

Ramírez, 27, initially stayed in the game before he was replaced in the second inning by Luke Raley.

Ramírez began his career in the Pittsburgh Pirates system and made several stops before arriving in Tampa Bay. He made his major league debut with the Miami Marlins in 2019, was claimed off waivers by Cleveland in 2021, was traded to the Chicago Cubs in November of last year, and then was traded to the Rays in March.

He's been a surprising, breakout player for the Rays this season. In his first year with the team, Ramírez has primarily played as the team's designated hitter and is batting .329 with 35 RBI. He's also played at first base, in left field, and in right field.

The Rays have been one of the most injury-riddled teams in MLB this season with more than dozen players — including Mike Zunino, Wander Franco, Kevin Kiermaier, Tyler Glasnow, and Shane Baz — currently on the injured list. Despite the bad injury luck, Tampa Bay is 50-41 and sits at the top of the AL Wild Card race.
