Rays place right-hander Chris Archer on IL with hip discomfort

The Tampa Bay Rays placed right-hander Chris Archer on the 10-day injured list with hip discomfort, the team announced Sunday.

Archer left his Aug. 22 start in the second inning because of left hip tightness, but he has made three starts since.

The 32-year-old missed more than three months this season after leaving an April start with right lateral forearm tightness. His Aug. 22 start was his first since April.

Archer is 1-1 in six appearances this season with a 4.66 ERA, 1.345 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.

Although Archer is headed to the IL, the Rays are getting two players back from injury, including right-hander Nick Anderson and outfielder Brett Phillips.

The Rays are first in the American League East with an 89-54 record, 8.5 games ahead of the second-place Boston Red Sox.
