MLB: Houston Astros at Toronto Blue Jays ? Nick Turchiaro-USA TODAY Sports

Vinny Capra remains a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays opted to non-tender Capra (along with Raimel Tapia and Bradley Zimmer) ahead of Friday’s roster decision deadline, making him a free agent. Rather than finding a new team, Capra re-signed with the Blue Jays on a minor-league contract.

Capra, a right-handed hitting middle infielder, was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He put himself on the map as a prospect when he slashed a .316/.390/.531 line between Double-A and Triple-A in 2021.

After a strong start to the 2022 season with the Buffalo Bisons, Capra was added to the 40-man and big-league roster when Cavan Biggio went on the COVID-19 Injured List. Capra picked up one hit and drew two walks over the course of seven plate appearances with the Blue Jays.

Capra will give the Blue Jays added infield depth with the Bisons next season, though he looks like a longshot to be added to the 40-man roster again. The Blue Jays have a crowded infield situation following the roster additions ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman, Cavan Biggio, and Santiago Espinal are the big league names, but prospects Otto Lopez, Leo Jimenez, Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger, and Spencer Horowitz will be pushing for an opportunity in the majors.
