Former Los Angeles Angels minor league pitching coordinator Buddy Carlyle was let go by the team recently, but it seems that he wasn’t out on his own for long. He has been picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays and will serve as their pitching coordinator going forward.
Carlyle was fired shortly after an incident that involved former Angels star pitcher Troy Percival. Percival was invited to help some prospects of the Angels, but he was frustrated with how player development was going. So, he voiced his frustrations, and the Halos made a change.
General Manager Perry Minasian explained the change, citing that they wanted to go in a different direction after reflecting on the previous season.
“When you end the season, you go through a full review,” Minasian said. “And you reflect and you look at things, and you see where you are in different areas. … Our pitching program is something we wanted to change. And felt like we needed to change.”
Some pitchers in the Angels organization did enjoy how Carlyle handed things, however, as pitcher Reid Detmers believes that he helped him with a mechanical issue in late 2022.
“Detmers said Carlyle suggested a mechanical tweak that the lefty believes directly led to a late-season resurgence in 2022”
It wasn’t meant to be for him with the Angels, and Carlyle now lands in Tampa Bay where he will likely have more talent to work with. The Angels have been lacking in their farm system for some time now, so this could be a good move for him.
